Unakoti Archaeological Site
Unakoti is a magnificent rock-cut archaeological site dating back to the 7th–9th centuries. The name literally means "one less than a crore" in Bengali. According to legend, Lord Shiva was traveling to Kashi with a crore of gods and goddesses; they stayed here for the night but only Shiva woke up before dawn, so he turned the others into stone. The site features massive bas-relief sculptures carved into the vertical rocky walls of the hill. The central figure is the Unakotiswara Kal Bhairava, a 30-foot tall head of Lord Shiva. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage tentative list member due to its unique artistic and historical value. It is surrounded by thick forests and a natural stream that flows into small pools known as Kundas. The stairs leading up and down the hill offer a moderate trekking experience. It is the most important pilgrimage site for Saivites in Northeast India. The sheer scale of the carvings is awe-inspiring and remains a mystery to modern archaeologists.
