The Unakoti Rock Carvings represent one of the most significant archaeological sites in India, often referred to as the "Angkor Wat of the Northeast." Dating back to the 7th to 9th centuries, these carvings are colossal bas-relief structures etched onto the vertical rocky walls of the hills. The na me Unakoti literally means "one less than a crore" in Bengali, reflecting a deep-rooted Hindu legend. According to mythology, Lord Shiva was traveling to Kashi with one crore gods and goddesses. When the others failed to wake up before dawn as instructed, a furious Shiva cursed them all to turn into stone, leaving them behind at this site. Today, the carvings showcase a unique style that sits between classical Indian art and tribal influence. The most famous images include the giant Ganesha figures and various depictions of Hindu deities like Durga and Vishnu. The sheer scale of the work, performed on such difficult terrain, remains a mystery to modern historians. Over centuries, these carvings were hidden by dense forest until they were rediscovered and brought under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
