Agastyaarkoodam (Agastya Mala)

Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), Kerala, India
Agastyaarkoodam is the second highest peak in Kerala (1,868 meters or 6,129 feet) and is a revered pilgrimage site for devotees of the Hindu sage Agastya, believed to be the father of Tamil language and Siddha medicine. More than just a peak, it's part of the Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve, a UNESC O World Heritage site known for its exceptional biodiversity. This region is a treasure trove of rare medicinal herbs and plants, with over 2,000 species, many endemic to the Western Ghats. Reaching the summit of Agastyaarkoodam is a challenging but rewarding trek that usually spans two days. The trek starts from Bonacaud, leading through dense forests, grasslands, and rocky terrain. The trail is known for its rich wildlife, including elephants, sambar deer, barking deer, leopards, and various bird species, making it a haven for nature photographers and wildlife enthusiasts. The Kerala Forest Department issues permits for the trek, which is generally open only for a limited period (usually from mid-January to mid-March) each year, following strict guidelines to protect the fragile ecosystem. Only a limited number of passes (often 100 per day) are issued, and online booking well in advance is essential. The trek is not just a physical challenge but also a spiritual journey for many. At the summit, there's a small stone statue of Sage Agastya where pilgrims offer prayers. The panoramic views from the top, encompassing vast stretches of forests, valleys, and distant plains, are simply breathtaking. Due to its status as a biosphere reserve and a sacred site, the trek is carefully managed to minimize human impact, offering an untouched and pristine wilderness experience. Historically, women were not allowed to trek to Agastyaarkoodam, but recent court rulings have changed this, opening the pilgrimage to all.
