Archaeological Museum, Kamalapura
The Archaeological Museum at Kamalapura is the official gateway to understanding the history and scale of the Vijayanagara Empire. Established by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), it houses a vast collection of artifacts recovered from the ruins of Hampi. The museum is divided into four mai n galleries. The most fascinating exhibit is the large-scale scale model of the Hampi topography in the central courtyard, which helps visitors visualize the layout of the entire city. The galleries display exquisite sculptures of Hindu deities, ancient coins, copper plate grants, and traditional weaponry. There are also prehistoric tools and hero stones (Viragal) that predate the empire. One can find detailed sections on the social, religious, and economic life of the people of Vijayanagara. The museum also features a section on the excavations conducted over several decades. It provides a quiet, air-conditioned environment to absorb the historical context before or after visiting the actual sites. The artifacts here include beautiful limestone panels from the Buddhist era and brass documents.
