Basheshwar Mahadev Temple

Bhuntar, Himachal Pradesh, India
The Basheshwar Mahadev Temple in Bajaura is the largest stone temple in the Kullu district. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this 8th-century marvel is famous for its intricate stone carvings and pyramidal shape. It is situated on the banks of the Beas River, offering a serene environment for prayer. The t emple houses a large 'Yoni-Lingam' which is the main deity. The outer walls are decorated with carvings of various Hindu gods like Vishnu, Ganesha, and Durga. Legend says it was built by the Pandavas in a single night. Despite the massive earthquake of 1905, this temple stood firm, which is a testament to its engineering. It is an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) protected site. Visitors often feel a deep sense of antiquity and divinity here. The temple's location on the national highway makes it a very accessible yet peaceful stop for travelers. The craftsmanship on the stone is so fine that it looks like embroidery on rock. It is a masterpiece of early medieval North Indian architecture.
