Biraja Temple

Jajpur, Odisha, India
Sub Place Details: The Biraja Temple is the most significant religious landmark in Jajpur. It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas where the navel of Goddess Sati is believed to have fallen. The presiding deity, Maa Biraja, is a form of Goddess Durga, depicted with two hands. One hand holds a spear pierc ing the chest of the demon Mahishasura, while the other pulls his tail. This unique iconography sets it apart from other Durga temples where she usually has ten hands. The temple is located on the banks of the sacred Baitarani river. It is also known as Nabhi Gaya, where devotees perform ancestor worship called Pinda Daan. The spiritual energy here is palpable, drawing millions of pilgrims every year. The complex is vast and houses several smaller shrines dedicated to various Hindu gods. It is considered the heart of Jajpur's spiritual identity. Visitors feel a deep sense of peace while walking through the temple courtyard. The history of this site dates back to the Gupta era, though the current structure was renovated in the 13th century. :
