Chamundi Hills & Temple

Mysore, Karnataka, India
History and Significance: This temple, dedicated to Goddess Chamundeshwari, the family deity of the Mysore Royal Family (the Wadiyars), is a vital spiritual site. It is believed that the Goddess slayed the buffalo-headed demon Mahishasura here, giving Mysore its name. The original temple is ancient, but the current structure owes much to the patronage and renovation by the Wadiyar rulers, especially Krishnaraja Wodeyar III in 1827. The setting atop Chamundi Hills offers a unique blend of spirituality and scenic beauty. It is most crowded during Navaratri and Dasara, when special poojas and processions are held. The 1,000 steps leading up the hill, built by Dodda Devaraja Wodeyar in 1659, are a popular path for pilgrims and fitness enthusiasts. The place has two other ancient temples, the Mahabaleswara and Lakshmi Narayana Swamy temples. The sheer size of the Nandi statue on the way is a major draw.:

Style and Structure: The temple is a stellar example of Dravidian architecture, characterized by its towering, ornate entrance gateway, known as the Gopuram or Gopura. This Gopuram is seven-tiered and highly visible from a distance. The main structure is quadrangular, comprising the Sanctum Sanctorum, Navaranga Hall (main hall), Antharala Mantapa (ante-chamber), and the surrounding Prakara (enclosure). A small Vimana (tower) sits atop the sanctum.

Dimensions and Features: The most striking architectural feature aside from the Gopuram is the massive, monolithic statue of Nandi (Lord Shiva's bull) on the 800th step of the hill, measuring 16 feet in height and 25 feet in length. The temple's silver-plated doorway and the exquisitely carved stone pillars add to its grandeur. The entrance to the temple was significantly enhanced by Krishnaraja Wodeyar III. The overall structure reflects the continuous patronage of the Wadiyar dynasty towards traditional temple art. :
