How To Reach Chamundi Hills & Temple

Mysore, Karnataka, India
History and Significance: This temple, dedicated to Goddess Chamundeshwari, the family deity of the Mysore Royal Family (the Wadiyars), is a vital spiritual site. It is believed that the Goddess slayed the buffalo-headed demon Mahishasura here, giving Mysore its name. The original temple is ancient, but the current structure owes much to the patronage and renovation by the Wadiyar rulers, especially Krishnaraja Wodeyar III in 1827. The setting atop Chamundi Hills offers a unique blend of spirituality and scenic beauty. It is most crowded during Navaratri and Dasara, when special poojas and processions are held. The 1,000 steps leading up the hill, built by Dodda Devaraja Wodeyar in 1659, are a popular path for pilgrims and fitness enthusiasts. The place has two other ancient temples, the Mahabaleswara and Lakshmi Narayana Swamy temples. The sheer size of the Nandi statue on the way is a major draw.:

How to Reach

By Air (Airport: MYQ) The nearest airport is Mysore Airport (MYQ), approximately 14. 6 km away. From the airport, a taxi or pre-booked cab is the most convenient option, taking about 30-45 minutes, depending on traffic. The drive is scenic.

By Train (Railway Station: MYS) Mysore Junction (MYS) is the main railway station, located about 13. 2 km from the hill base. From the station, you can easily hire a taxi, an auto-rickshaw (auto fare should be negotiated or metered), or use the City Bus Stand. By Road (Bus Stand/City Centre) The hill is about 13 km from the city center and the main Suburban Bus Stand. Regular City Buses (including AC Volvo buses) run every 15-20 minutes from the City Bus Stand, costing a nominal fare (e. g. , Rs.20).

By Local Transport: Auto-rickshaws (negotiate the fare or insist on the meter) and Cabs (Ola/Uber) are readily available throughout Mysore city. Many local taxi services offer a fixed rate for a round trip with waiting time. The 1000 Steps trail is reachable by local transport to the foot of the hill (near the KSRTC bus stop at the base), but the walk up is strictly on foot. The most convenient transport mode is a Taxi/Cab for a direct and comfortable round trip. :
