Dampa Tiger Reserve

Mamit, Mizoram, India
Dampa Tiger Reserve is the largest wildlife sanctuary in Mizoram, covering an expansive area of approximately 500 square kilometers. Nestled in the northwestern part of the state, it shares a border with Bangladesh. The reserve is a biodiversity hotspot, characterized by steep hills, deep valleys, and dense tropical evergreen forests. Though tigers are the namesake residents and are famously elusive, the reserve is a paradise for various other species. It is home to leopards, clouded leopards, elephants, Indian gaurs, and a vast array of primates including the Hoolock Gibbon and the Phayre’s Leaf Monkey. The reserve's landscape is dotted with bamboo brakes and salt licks that attract wildlife. For eco-tourists, Dampa offers an untouched wilderness experience that is far removed from the commercialized safari parks of mainland India. The sound of the jungle, from the calls of the Great Hornbill to the rustling of the Malayan Sun Bear in the undergrowth, creates an immersive atmosphere. It is managed with a focus on conservation, ensuring that the natural habitat remains pristine for the endangered flora and fauna that call this rugged terrain their home.
