Dharwad Fort
The Dharwad Fort, though mostly in ruins today, remains a symbol of the city's strategic importance through the centuries. Built originally in 1403 by a ruler named Dharav, the fort has seen the rise and fall of several empires, including the Vijayanagara Empire, the Adil Shahi Dynasty, the Maratha s, and eventually the British East India Company. The word "Dharwad" itself is derived from 'Dharawada', meaning a gateway town, emphasizing the fort's role as a transition point between the hills and the plains. Historically, it served as a major ammunition depot and a granary. During the British era, it was a site of significant administrative activity. Today, only two massive gates and portions of the thick stone walls remain standing, surrounded by modern government buildings and schools. Walking through the surviving gateways, one can still appreciate the massive granite blocks and the defensive architecture designed to withstand cannon fire. The fort area now houses the Civil Courts and the Sub-jail, which adds a layer of modern history to the site. Despite the encroachment of the modern city, the area around the fort still retains an old-world charm with narrow lanes and traditional houses. It is a place where history sits silently amidst the daily hustle of a growing city. For any history enthusiast, the fort serves as a starting point to understand the military history of the Deccan region.
