Chandramouleshwar Temple
The Chandramouleshwar Temple is a magnificent 11th-century structure dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located near the serene Unkal Lake, this temple is a shining example of the Western Chalukya architectural style. Unlike many other temples, this one is unique because it features four entrances facing the four cardinal directions, though only one is primary today. The temple is built using soapstone, which allowed ancient artisans to carve extremely intricate details that have survived for nearly a millennium. Inside the sanctum, there is a rare Chaturmukha Linga (a four-faced Linga of Shiva), which is a significant rarity in Hindu temple architecture. The temple's history is shrouded in legends, with local lore suggesting it was built overnight by celestial beings or highly skilled artisans in a race against time. The monument is currently under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Despite being in the middle of a bustling residential area, the temple premises offer a deep sense of calm and spiritual energy. It serves as a living museum for students of history and architecture. The carvings on the outer walls depict various deities, dancing girls, and scenes from ancient Indian epics. Visitors often remark on the precision of the circular pillars inside the hall, which look as though they were turned on a modern lathe machine.
