Dhauli Giri Shanti Stupa

Satapada, Odisha, India
Dhauli Giri, or Dhauli Hill, is a site of great historical and spiritual significance. It is believed to be the place where the Kalinga War was fought between Emperor Ashoka the Great and the kingdom of Kalinga. The war was so bloody and horrific that it led to a profound change of heart in Ashoka, who then embraced Buddhism and dedicated his life to peace. To commemorate this transformation, a magnificent white Peace Pagoda, the "Shanti Stupa," was built on top of the hill by the Japan Buddha Sangha in the 1970s. The Stupa is a symbol of peace and non-violence. It is adorned with stone carvings depicting the life of Lord Buddha and the Edicts of Ashoka. From the top of the hill, one can get a panoramic view of the Daya River and the surrounding landscape, which is believed to have turned red with the blood of the soldiers during the war. The serene atmosphere of the Stupa and its historical importance make it a deeply moving and reflective place.
