Dzukou Point

Kigwema, Nagaland, India
Dzukou Point in Jakhama serves as the most adventurous gateway to the world-famous Dzukou Valley. Unlike the gentler Viswema trail, this entrance is known for its physical demand and raw natural beauty. The trail starts with a steep climb through dense forests where the canopy is so thick that sunl ight barely touches the ground. As you ascend, the air becomes crisp and the sounds of the modern world fade into the rustle of leaves and distant bird calls. This specific point is favored by seasoned trekkers who seek a more direct, albeit vertical, challenge to reach the valley floor. The path is lined with indigenous flora, including wild herbs and ancient ferns that have survived for centuries. Reaching the crest of this point rewards hikers with the first breathtaking glimpse of the rolling green hummocks that define the valley. The sense of achievement upon reaching the summit of Jakhama point is unparalleled, offering a spiritual connection to the rugged terrain of Nagaland. This entrance is not just a path but a journey through various ecological zones, transitioning from subtropical forest to alpine-like meadows within a few hours of climbing. It is a place of silence, resilience, and immense natural power.

    Trail Engineering and Natural Steps:

Dimension: The trail spans approximately 6 KMS of vertical ascent with stone steps ranging from 10 to 18 inches in height. The architecture of Dzukou Point is primarily a masterpiece of indigenous trail-making. The local Angami community has maintained these paths using locally sourced stone slabs to create a "stairway to heaven" effect. These stones are meticulously placed to prevent erosion during the heavy Monsoon rains. At the base, there is a small registration counter built with bamboo and wood, measuring about 15x15 feet, showcasing traditional Naga joinery without the use of metal nails. The trail itself features resting stones called "Haphu" which are large flat boulders placed at strategic intervals for weary travelers to sit and balance their heavy wicker baskets. The natural rock formations at the peak create a sheltered overhang that acts as a temporary refuge during sudden mountain storms.
