FAQs On Brajeshwari Devi Temple

Pragpur, Himachal Pradesh, India
The Brajeshwari Devi Temple, also known as Vajreshwari Temple, is a major Shakti Peetha located in the ancient town of Nagarkot (modern-day Kangra). It is one of the 51 sacred sites where the left breast of Goddess Sati is believed to have fallen. The temple has a tumultuous history, having been fa mously looted by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1009 AD for its immense wealth of gold and diamonds. It was later destroyed by the 1905 Kangra earthquake and rebuilt in its current form in the 1920s. The deity is worshipped here as a fierce form of Goddess Durga, representing the power of the thunderbolt (Vajra). The temple complex is fortified with stone walls and features a grand entrance known as the Nagarkhana, where traditional drums are played during aartis. Inside the sanctum, the goddess is worshipped in the form of a Pindi (stone). The temple is a hub of ritualistic activity, with free Langar (community kitchen) served to thousands of devotees daily. The surrounding bazaar is a vibrant maze of shops selling religious artifacts, local sweets, and dry fruits. The temple overlooks the Banganga and Majhi rivers, providing a scenic setting. Legends also link the temple to the Pandavas, who are said to have built the original structure. It remains a symbol of resilience, having survived invasions and natural disasters to remain a pillar of faith in the Kangra valley. The spiritual aura of the temple is palpable, especially during the morning chants that echo through the stone corridors. It is not just a place of worship but a living museum of North Indian religious history.
