Dam History and Utility: Officially known as the Kaddam Narayana Reddy Project, this dam is a massive engineering feat across the Kadam River, a tributary of the Godavari. Construction began in 1949 and was completed in 1958, aiming to transform the arid lands of Adilabad and Mancherial into fertil e agricultural zones. The project was named after Rishi Kandava, who is believed to have performed penance here. The dam faced a major crisis in 1958 when unprecedented floods caused a breach, leading to a significant reconstruction effort that was completed in 1969. Today, it serves as a primary source of irrigation for over 68,000 acres of land. The reservoir is also supplemented by the Saraswathi Canal from the Sriram Sagar Project. Beyond its utility, the dam is a popular picnic spot due to its scenic beauty. It is surrounded by lush green hillocks and the dense forests of the Deccan plateau. The sight of 18 massive flood gates releasing water during the monsoon is a breathtaking experience that draws tourists from across the state. The Telangana Tourism department has developed a park and guest houses nearby to encourage eco-tourism. It is a place where engineering meets nature, offering a peaceful retreat from the industrial bustle of the coal mines in the region.
