It is believed to have been used by the Vijayanagara kings, most notably Krishnadevaraya, to ceremonially weigh themselves against wealth—typically gold, silver, jewels, and precious stones—which was then distributed to the temple priests and the poor. This act of charity (dharma) was performed on special, auspicious occasions, such as royal coronations, Solar or Lunar eclipses, or the New Year's Day.
