Gopalpur Village

Chirkunda, Jharkhand, India
Gopalpur Village is home to one of the most significant yet understated archaeological sites in the Dhanbad district—the Ashokan Pillar and its associated ruins. According to local historical accounts and archaeological findings, this site dates back to the Mauryan Empire, specifically the reign of Emperor Ashoka. The presence of the pillar indicates that this region was once an important stop on the ancient trade routes that connected Pataliputra to the eastern coasts. The site features a weathered stone pillar and several large stone statues that are believed to represent the Emperor or Buddhist deities. For decades, historians and anthropologists have visited this quiet village to study the inscriptions and the unique carving style that blends local art with Mauryan aesthetics. The village itself maintains a very traditional lifestyle, providing a window into the rural heritage of Jharkhand. The ruins are spread across a small hillock, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. Despite its immense historical value, the site remains a peaceful location, far from the typical tourist crowds. It serves as a testament to the deep-rooted history of the region, which predates the industrial and coal-mining era by thousands of years.
