Panchet Dam & Reservoir

Chirkunda, Jharkhand, India
Panchet Dam is a majestic structure that stands as the final of the four multi-purpose dams in the first phase of the DVC project. Inaugurated in 1959 by Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, it is built on the Damodar River and is flanked by the towering Panchet Hill. The reservoir creates a massive lake that ser ves as a boundary between the Dhanbad district of Jharkhand and the Purulia district of West Bengal. The location is exceptionally picturesque, with the green hills providing a perfect backdrop to the blue waters of the dam. It is a popular spot for picnickers, especially during the winter months. The dam not only controls floods but also generates hydroelectric power through its 80 MW capacity station. Historically, the area was once the seat of the Panchakot Raj, and many ancient ruins were submerged during its construction. Today, it remains one of the most visited natural and engineering sites in the region.
