Harla Jori

Deoghar, Jharkhand, India
Harla Jori is a site of immense spiritual and mythological significance, intrinsically linked to the legend of the Baidyanath Jyotirlinga in Deoghar. The name itself, Harla Jori, is a contraction of Hari (Lord Vishnu) and Hara (Lord Shiva), signifying the divine meeting and union of the two deities at this very spot. The ancient legend recounts that the demon king Ravana was carrying the Kamna Lingam (Wish-fulfilling Shiva Lingam) gifted by Lord Shiva from Mount Kailash to his kingdom of Lanka. However, bound by the condition that he must not place the Lingam on the ground, Ravana felt an urgent need to relieve himself (Laghushanka). It was at Harla Jori that he encountered a young shepherd boy, who was none other than Lord Vishnu in disguise. Ravana handed the precious Shivlinga to the shepherd, instructing him to hold it until he returned. Lord Vishnu then intentionally placed the Lingam on the ground, thereby establishing it permanently at the spot which is now the main Baidyanath Dham Temple. Harla Jori is where this pivotal exchange occurred, making it the true precursor site to the famous Jyotirlinga. The site hosts a modest but deeply revered Shiva temple, an ancient Shivalingam known as Haritkinath, and a distinct depression believed to be the place of Ravana's prolonged natural call, often referred to as Ravana Jori or Laghushanka Kund. The serene and tranquil environment, surrounded by a rural landscape, offers a powerful contrast to the bustling main temple, providing a perfect setting for quiet introspection and devotion. The place is also noted for being surrounded by the Haritaki (Myrobalan) trees in ancient times, hence the name Haritkinath. The enduring folklore makes Harla Jori a must-visit for pilgrims seeking the complete narrative of the Baidyanath Dham story.

Shravani Mela Connection: Although the main focus of the Shravani Mela is the Baidyanath Dham Temple, Harla Jori lies near the traditional pilgrimage route. During the holy month of Shravan (July-August), a large number of pilgrims (Kanwariyas) who carry holy Ganga water from Sultanganj stop or pass near Harla Jori. This turns the quiet spot into a place of vibrant devotion, with temporary stalls and an influx of saffron-clad devotees. The atmosphere is charged with collective faith, creating a unique spiritual spectacle.

Maha Shivaratri Celebrations: Maha Shivaratri is a major festival celebrated with great fervor. On this night, special Puja is performed, and the temple is often beautifully decorated and lit up. The celebrations include bhajans (devotional songs) and a gathering of local devotees. The night-long vigil (Jagarana) for Lord Shiva is a solemn and powerful event here, providing a profound spiritual experience that contrasts with the daytime tranquility.

Things To Do

  • ...
Perform Rituals at Haritkinath Temple: The primary activity is performing Puja (Worship) and Abhishek (Ritual Bathing) to the Haritkinath Shivalingam. This involves offering water, milk, bilva leaves, and flowers. Pilgrims often carry water from the Ganga at Sultanganj for this very purpose, following the traditional Kanwar Yatra route. This is believed to fulfill desires, as the Lingam is connected to the original Kamna Lingam story.

Meditate by the Shool Harini Tank: Spend time in quiet contemplation near the Shool Harini Tank. The calm, open atmosphere is highly conducive to meditation and spiritual reflection. Unlike crowded city temples, Harla Jori's setting allows for a deep connection with nature and the divine energy of the place. The ritualistic bath is optional, but spending time by the water is deeply rewarding. ...

The Pivotal Role in Jyotirlinga Establishment: Harla Jori is most famous as the crucial location where the chain of events leading to the establishment of the Baidyanath Jyotirlinga in Deoghar was set in motion. It is the site where Ravana handed the Kamna Lingam to Lord Vishnu (disguised as a cowherd Baiju or Brahmin). This act is the 'why' behind the main Jyotirlinga not being in Lanka.

The Hari-Hara Milan Sthal: The site is famously known as Hari-Hara Jori, celebrating the meeting (Jori) of Lord Vishnu (Hari) and Lord Shiva (Hara). This confluence is a rare spiritual concept, making the temple a symbol of unity among the different Hindu sects that worship either deity. The dual presence, though in legendary form, is a major draw for devout pilgrims.

The Holy Ravana Jori Stream: The presence of the Ravana Jori stream or pond, believed to be the spot where Ravana urinated for seven days and seven nights, is a unique and famous marker of the place. Pilgrims often take a small amount of this water as a part of their ritual, linking their visit directly to the mythological event. The self-manifested Shivalingam, Haritkinath, also adds to the fame, being considered a direct manifestation of Lord Shiva at the site.

Architecture of the Harla Jori Temple Complex: The architectural style of the temple at Harla Jori is relatively simple and utilitarian, reflecting the temple's ancient, yet less commercialized, nature compared to the grand main shrines.

Shiva Temple Structure and Materials: The main Shiva temple is typically a small, traditional structure built of stone and brick, embodying the local Jharkhandi temple architecture. It features a simple sanctum (Garbhagriha) housing the Shivalingam, and a small porch or hall (Mandapa). The construction often utilizes locally sourced materials, giving it a rustic, time-worn appearance that emphasizes its antiquity. Unlike the highly ornate carvings of major temples, this structure relies on its spiritual history rather than elaborate exterior decoration.

Approximate Dimensions: The main temple structure is generally small, perhaps an area of 400 to 600 square feet. The Sanctum Sanctorum (Garbhagriha) is typically a small square room, possibly 10 ft x 10 ft. The entire complex, including the tank and ancillary shrines, is spread over a wider area.

Ancillary Structures: The complex also includes a separate small shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu, signifying the Hari-Hara union. A prominent feature is the Shool Harini Tank (a huge water tank/pond) and the Ravana Jori stream or water source, which are important elements in the site's layout. The presence of these water bodies is integral to the pilgrimage, often being surrounded by simple boundary walls and steps. The simplicity of the architecture underscores the focus on the mythological event that transpired here, rather than monumental construction. The oldest part of the temple, the foundation and the Shivalingam, dates back to an ancient period, while the visible superstructure is likely a result of renovations, such as those mentioned to have been done by Achintan Das.
