Hathni Kund Barrage

Yamunanagar, Haryana, India:
Constructed between 1996 and 1999, the Hathni Kund Barrage is a massive concrete barrage on the Yamuna River, replacing the older Tajewala Barrage a few kilometers downstream. Its primary purpose is to divert the river's water into the Western Yamuna Canal and Eastern Yamuna Canal, which are crucial for irrigating large areas in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh and supplying water to the National Capital Region (NCR). The barrage's reservoir and surrounding area have also created a significant wetland habitat, which is now home to at least 31 species of waterbirds, including many ducks, making it a prominent spot for ornithology. The name is derived from the nearby Hathni Kund, a rock pool where a female elephant (Hathni) allegedly bathed. It is both a critical piece of infrastructure and a beautiful tourist spot offering panoramic views of the Yamuna and the Shivalik foothills.

Modern Concrete Barrage Design: The architecture is a study in modern civil engineering, built entirely of reinforced concrete, designed for heavy-duty water diversion and flood control.

Functional Structure: It is a linear structure (360 m long) featuring a series of 10 main floodgates and 8 undersluices to regulate the massive flow of the Yamuna River.

Dimension: The barrage is 360 meters long with a designed maximum discharge capacity of 28,200 cubic meters per second (995,874 cu ft/s). The design ensures the effective diversion of water into both the Western and Eastern Yamuna Canals. The overall cost of construction was around Rs 168 crore.

Spillway Mechanism: The gates are massive and operated by machinery, representing a large-scale intervention in the river's natural flow for human benefit.
