Biodiversity and Dandakaranya: Kinnerasani Sanctuary Details: The Kinnerasani Wildlife Sanctuary is a vast protected forest area spanning 635.40 square kilometers, making it one of the largest sanctuaries in Telangana. It is nestled within the historic Dandakaranya Forest and gets its name from the Kinnerasani River that flows through it before merging with the Godavari River. The sanctuary is characterized by dense mixed deciduous forests, teak plantations, and scrub jungle, providing diverse habitats for a wide range of fauna. Key species include the Tiger, Leopard (Panthera pardus), Gaur (Indian Bison), Sambar, Cheetal (Spotted Deer), Chinkara, Chousingha (Four-horned Antelope), Sloth Bear, Wild Boar, and many species of reptiles and birds. The sanctuary's core is the picturesque Kinnerasani Lake, formed by the dam, which features densely forested islands that are a vital refuge for wildlife. Historically, the area is significant as part of the ancient forest where, according to local legend, Lord Rama spent a period of his exile. Declared a sanctuary in 1981, it is dedicated to protecting the region's biodiversity, which was previously threatened by human encroachment and deforestation.
