Sindhudurg Fort is the crowning glory of Malvan and a testament to the strategic brilliance of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the great Maratha warrior king. Built between 1664 and 1667 AD, this magnificent fortress was designed to be impregnable, a naval base to counter the rising power of foreign n aval forces and a stronghold to protect the Konkan coast. Constructed on a rocky island named Kurte, the fort covers an area of over 48 acres, with massive zigzag battlements that once housed 42 bastions. The fort's unique design incorporates a secret passage, fresh water wells within the salty sea, and a main entrance ingeniously concealed to appear as part of the rocky coastline, making it incredibly difficult for invaders to locate. The fort's construction involved over 3,000 workers and an enormous quantity of iron, lead, and other materials. Legend has it that 2000 khandis (a unit of measure) of iron were used, and even molten lead was poured into the foundations to make it invincible. Within the fort walls, there are various structures, though many are now in ruins, including temples dedicated to Bhavani, Mahadev, and Maruti, as well as a unique temple dedicated to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj himself, where his handprints and footprints are preserved in lime. A visit to Sindhudurg Fort offers a fascinating journey back in time, providing insights into Maratha naval power and architectural prowess. The panoramic views of the Arabian Sea from the fort walls are breathtaking, especially during sunset. Local guides are usually available at the fort entrance to narrate its rich history and captivating stories.
