Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary

Thane, Maharashtra, India
Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary is a unique urban wilderness located on the western bank of the Thane Creek. Spread over 1690 hectares, it was declared a sanctuary in 2015 to protect the vital mangrove ecosystem and the thousands of migratory birds that visit every year. It is one of the few places in the world where a massive population of Flamingos can be seen right next to a bustling metropolis. The sanctuary is home to two types of flamingos: the Greater Flamingo and the Lesser Flamingo. These birds migrate from the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat during the winter months, staying here from November until May. Apart from flamingos, the sanctuary hosts over 200 species of other birds, including Pied Avocets, Black-headed Ibis, Western Reef Herons, and various species of Sandpipers. The area is a dense mangrove forest, featuring species like Avicennia marina and Sonneratia alba, which act as a natural barrier against coastal erosion and provide a breeding ground for fish and crabs. The Coastal and Marine Biodiversity Centre at Airoli serves as the main gateway to the sanctuary. It features a modern museum with interactive displays about marine life, mangrove ecosystems, and bird migration patterns. The highlight of a visit is the boat safari, which takes visitors deep into the creek during high tide to see the flamingos from a close yet respectful distance. The sight of thousands of pink birds taking flight against the backdrop of the city’s skyline is truly unforgettable. The sanctuary also features a mangrove boardwalk, allowing visitors to walk through the aerial roots of the mangroves and observe the mudflats. It is a premier destination for eco-tourism and environmental education, highlighting the delicate balance between urban development and nature conservation. For residents of Thane and Mumbai, it offers a quick and refreshing escape into the wild without leaving the city limits. The sanctuary is also recognized as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International.
