Deoghar, Jharkhand, India
Harila Jori, a small village located about 5 km north of the main Baidyanath Dham, is a place of profound mythological and historical significance. The name "Harila Jori" is a beautiful fusion of "Hari" (a name for Lord Vishnu) and "Hara" (a name for Lord Shiva), symbolizing the sacred union of the two divine beings at this very spot. According to a local legend, this is the exact location where Lord Vishnu, disguised as a shepherd, appeared to the demon king Ravana. The story goes that Ravana, on his way to Lanka with the lingam of Lord Shiva, felt a strong urge to relieve himself. He sought a reliable person to hold the lingam for him, and a young shepherd, who was none other than Lord Vishnu, offered to help. Lord Vishnu, with a strict condition that he would not place the lingam on the ground, held it for Ravana. When Ravana returned, he was shocked to find the lingam placed on the ground, and he was unable to move it. This mythological event is believed to have taken place at Harila Jori, and the place is home to a small, ancient Shiva temple. The temple's sanctum houses a swayambhu (self-manifested) lingam, which is believed to have sprouted from beneath a "Haritaki" tree, a medicinal plant with a number of health benefits. This unique feature adds to the temple's spiritual significance and attracts a large number of devotees. The temple complex also has a small stream, known as "Ravana Jori," which is believed to be the spot where Ravana urinated after placing the lingam on the ground. The place is a great destination for those who are interested in history, mythology, and religion. The serene and tranquil environment of the village, its lush greenery, and the beautiful temples make it a perfect spot for a quiet retreat.
