Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is a colossal masonry dam built across the Krishna River, straddling the border of Nalgonda and Guntur. Completed in 1967, it was one of the first "modern temples" of independent India as described by Jawaharlal Nehru. The dam is 124 meters high and over 1.6 kilometers long, mak ing it a masterpiece of civil engineering. It plays a crucial role in irrigation for millions of acres and generates significant hydroelectric power. The reservoir created by the dam is the third largest man-made lake in the world. In the middle of this lake lies Nagarjunakonda, an island that houses ancient Buddhist relics and a museum. The dam has 26 crest gates which, when opened during the monsoon, create a spectacular sight of "white water" cascading down. It is a major tourist attraction that showcases the success of the Green Revolution. The area is surrounded by the lush Nallamala forests and the Nagarjuna Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary. Visitors can enjoy long boat rides to reach the island museum. The dam is named after the Buddhist philosopher Acharya Nagarjuna. It stands as a symbol of human perseverance and technological progress. The project transformed the economy of the entire region.
