How To Reach Atal Tunnel

Manali, Himachal Pradesh, India
Engineering Marvel and Purpose: The Atal Tunnel, formerly known as the Rohtang Tunnel, is a phenomenal engineering achievement. At 9.02 KM in length, it holds the distinction of being the world's longest single-tube highway tunnel at an altitude above 10,000 feet (3,048 meters). Its primary purpose is to provide an all-weather, year-round road link between Manali in the Kullu Valley and Keylong in the tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti, significantly reducing the travel time and distance. This link is vital, especially during winter when the Rohtang Pass is completely blocked by heavy snowfall.Strategic Importance: Beyond tourism, the tunnel holds immense strategic and national security importance, enabling faster movement of supplies and troops to the forward areas near the Chinese border. It has revolutionized the socio-economic landscape of the once-isolated Lahaul Valley, allowing locals to maintain commerce and connectivity even during the harsh, snow-bound winter months, improving access to education and medical services, thus making it a lifeline for the residents. The tunnel is a proud symbol of India's infrastructural capabilities.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Kullu Manali Airport (KUU) at Bhuntar, approximately 80 KM from the South Portal. From Bhuntar, you can hire a taxi or take a local bus to Manali, and then proceed to the tunnel via Solang Valley. The alternative is Chandigarh Airport, about 300 KM away, requiring a longer road journey.

By Train: The closest major broad-gauge railway station is Chandigarh Railway Station (300 KM). From Chandigarh, frequent overnight bus services and private taxis are readily available for the journey to Manali, which is the base for visiting the tunnel. Joginder Nagar (160 KM) is the nearest narrow-gauge station.

By Road: The tunnel is on the Leh-Manali Highway (NH-3). The South Portal is located near Dhundi in Solang Valley, about 25 KM from Manali town. This section can be reached easily by hiring a private taxi, cab, or a self-driven vehicle from Manali. The drive from Manali to the South Portal takes about 45 minutes to an hour.

By Local Transport: Local taxis and cabs from Manali are the most convenient option for a trip to the Atal Tunnel. Given the significant distance, auto-rickshaws are less suitable. Tourists often book a full-day cab service from Manali that includes the tunnel visit and the nearby sights like Solang Valley and Sissu.
