How To Reach Bamboo Rafting

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala, India
Bamboo Rafting is an adventurous and highly recommended activity in Periyar, offering a unique combination of trekking and a serene water-based safari. This eco-tourism program provides an intimate way to explore the forest and its wildlife from a different perspective ? silently gliding over the w ater on traditional bamboo rafts, much like the tribal communities have done for centuries. The activity typically begins with a guided trek into the dense forest. The duration of the trek varies depending on whether you choose a half-day or full-day package. During the trek, experienced forest guides, often from the local tribal communities, lead the way, pointing out different plant species, birdlife, and signs of animal activity. This part of the experience allows you to appreciate the forest floor and its smaller inhabitants up close. Upon reaching the water body, you transition to the bamboo rafts. These rafts are inherently quiet, allowing for a stealthy approach to wildlife congregating near the water's edge. You might spot elephants bathing or drinking, various species of deer grazing, and a myriad of water birds like Cormorants and Darters. The tranquility of floating on the bamboo raft, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the jungle, is truly therapeutic. The silence enhances the chances of spotting wildlife that might be deterred by the noise of motorized boats. The full-day package usually includes a packed lunch served amidst the wilderness, adding to the adventure. Bamboo rafting is a sustainable and low-impact way to explore the sanctuary, providing an unforgettable experience that blends physical activity with tranquil nature observation.
