How To Reach Bet Dwarka

Dwarka, Gujarat, India
The Legend of Shankhodhar: Bet Dwarka, also known as Shankhodhar, is a sacred island situated about 3 km off the coast of Okha. It is believed to be the actual residence of Lord Krishna during his reign in Dwarka. The word 'Bet' means gift, referring to the legend where Krishna's friend Sudama gifte d him puffed rice at this very location. The island is mentioned in the Mahabharata as 'Antardvipa' and has been a center of pilgrimage for centuries. The main temple, Dwarkadhish Temple, was built by Vallabhacharya and houses an idol believed to be made by Rukmini herself. Beyond its religious aura, the island is surrounded by white sand beaches and coral reefs, making it a blend of divinity and natural beauty. Archaeological excavations here have revealed submerged structures and pottery dating back to the Harappan and Mauryan eras, proving the island's ancient maritime significance. Visitors must take a ferry from Okha or drive across the newly built Sudarshan Setu to reach this tranquil sanctuary. The atmosphere on the island is vastly different from the mainland, offering a slow-paced life where spirituality is woven into every street. Local markets sell beautiful shells and traditional crafts, adding to the charm of the visit. It remains one of the most vital stops in the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit for devotees worldwide.
