How To Reach Bop Hill Falls
How to Reach
Via Shillong or Guwahati International Airport: The nearest major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati, Assam, located approximately 160 KMS away. GAU is well-connected to major Indian cities like Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai. From GAU, you would hire a pre-paid taxi or a shared cab to Shillong (about 3-4 hours) and then proceed towards Pynursla. The closer option is Shillong Airport (SHL) at Umroi, about 70 KMS away, which has limited connectivity, mostly to Kolkata. From SHL, a taxi is mandatory, first to Shillong and then onto the Pynursla route. The total journey from the airport involves a significant road trip.
By Train:
Via Guwahati Railway Station: The nearest major railway station is Guwahati Railway Station (GHY), which is the main rail head for the North East and is located about 145 KMS from Pynursla. GHY is connected to the rest of India via major express trains. From GHY, the journey is strictly by road. You can hire a dedicated cab or take a shared taxi from the station to Pynursla. The total road journey will take approximately 4-5 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. There is no railway line into Meghalaya.
By Road:
Via Shillong: Road travel is the only way to reach Pynursla and Bop Hill Falls. Pynursla is located about 50-60 KMS from Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya. The falls are situated further along the main road that connects Shillong to Dawki (NH-206). From Shillong, you can hire a dedicated tourist taxi (easily available at Police Bazaar) or take a shared local taxi/sumo from the Bara Bazaar area towards Pynursla or Dawki. The drive from Shillong is scenic, passing through rolling hills and forests, and takes about 2-2. 5 hours to reach the Pynursla area, and an additional 30-45 minutes to the falls. The road is generally in good condition but is winding and requires cautious driving.
By Local Transport:
Shared Sumos and Tourist Taxis: From Pynursla town center, you can easily hire a local taxi to take you the remaining 25 KMS to the falls. The most common form of local public transport are shared Sumo or Bolero taxis that ply the Pynursla-Dawki route. You can board one of these shared vehicles and ask the driver to drop you directly at the viewpoint, which will be the most economical option. It's advisable to arrange for the return trip or confirm the frequency of return taxis, as the falls are on a relatively isolated stretch of the highway. Dedicated tourist taxis are the most comfortable option but are considerably more expensive.
