How To Reach Chaugan
Historical Significance:The Chaugan is famously known as the heart of Chamba town, an expansive grassy meadow that serves as the central hub for all social, political, and cultural activities. Originally, it was a group of five small meadows which were later leveled in the 1890s by the British and l ocal rulers to form one vast, rectangular field, approximately a half-mile long and eighty yards wide. It derives its name from the Persian word "Chowgan," meaning 'polo ground,' which indicates its initial purpose in the time of the Rajas. It was transformed into a public promenade and a ground for sports like Cricket for the British colonial officers and the local elite. The Raja of Chamba, recognizing its strategic and social value, ensured its upkeep, making it the most prominent open space in the hills. The history of Chaugan is intrinsically linked with the history of the town itself, providing a place where the common people could gather and interact with the ruling family during grand occasions and festivals. The meadow is framed by the surrounding colonial and traditional Himachali architecture, offering a picturesque setting that encapsulates the town's heritage. Even today, it remains the focal point of town life, where people gather for evening strolls, morning exercises, and local market days. How to Reach
The Central Access Point:Reaching the Chaugan is straightforward as it is the central landmark of Chamba town.
By Air: The nearest airport is Gaggal Airport (Dharamshala - Kangra), which is approximately 170 KMS away. From the airport, one can hire a private taxi or take a pre-booked cab directly to Chamba town. The journey takes about 5-6 hours and is scenic but winding. The Chaugan is in the heart of the town, so the taxi will drop you right there or very close by.
By Train: The closest major railway station is Pathankot (Punjab), about 120 KMS away. Pathankot is well-connected to major Indian cities. From Pathankot Railway Station, you can hire a private taxi, which takes around 4 hours to reach Chamba. Alternatively, Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) buses run frequently from Pathankot to Chamba Bus Stand, which is just a 5-minute walk from the Chaugan.
By Road: Chamba is well-connected by road to major cities like Delhi (580 KMS), Chandigarh (350 KMS), Dharamshala (170 KMS), and Dalhousie (50 KMS). Direct overnight buses (Volvo and HRTC) are available from Delhi and Chandigarh to Chamba Bus Stand. The drive from Dalhousie is particularly beautiful. Upon reaching Chamba Bus Stand, the Chaugan is the first major landmark you will see, a short walk of about 300 meters.
By Local Transport: Within Chamba town, the Chaugan is easily accessible by foot from almost anywhere in the old town area. Local transport like auto-rickshaws or shared taxis are available for traveling to the Chaugan from areas further afield. The local bus routes often terminate or pass by the vicinity of the Chaugan, making it the primary drop-off point for local residents.
