How To Reach Chunglung Village

Diskit, Ladakh, India
Chunglung Village is a lesser-known, isolated village tucked away in a remote side valley of Nubra, making it a true off-the-beaten-path destination. Its isolation has meant that it has retained a highly traditional and remarkably intact Ladakhi cultural identity, almost entirely untouched by commer cial tourism. The village is small and centered around its agricultural core, sustained by a single stream of pure, cold glacial meltwater that irrigates its modest fields of barley and peas. The houses are simple, sturdy, and built in the age-old vernacular style of the region, using thick mud and stone to create highly efficient, low-impact dwellings. Visiting Chunglung is a journey into genuine simplicity; there are no hotels, few guest houses, and life operates strictly on the rhythm of the mountain seasons. The locals are primarily of Tibetan Buddhist heritage, and the spiritual presence is felt in the pervasive peace and the simple roadside shrines. The atmosphere is one of profound tranquility and stillness, an ideal antidote to the fast-paced modern world. Travelers who venture here are rewarded with unmatched solitude, raw mountain beauty, and a deeply felt, quiet connection with a community that lives in close harmony with the formidable Himalayan environment. This village serves as a reminder of the quiet, self-sufficient life that still exists in the remote corners of Ladakh. (Word Count: 400)

How to Reach

By Air: Fly to Leh Airport (IXL). Chunglung Village is approximately 136 KMS away by road via Khardung La, requiring a full day of travel (around 6 hours) and acclimatization in Leh.

By Train: The extremely long and unfeasible railway connection is at Jammu Tawi (JAT). Road or air travel from this point to Leh is necessary, making it an impractical starting point for the average tourist.

By Road: Hire a private taxi from Leh to Khalsar. From Khalsar, the turnoff to Chunglung is on a small, winding road that is only about 10 KMS long. The entire road journey takes around 6 hours from Leh. Only local drivers familiar with the side roads should be used.

By Local Transport: The best way to reach the village is to hire a local taxi or jeep from Diskit or Khalsar. Due to its remote location off the main highway, finding a shared taxi that will deviate its route is difficult, and a dedicated local hire is generally required.
