How To Reach Dagshai Jail Museum

Solan, Himachal Pradesh, India
Prison Legacy: The Dagshai Jail Museum is a unique historical site that was once a high-security military prison built in 1849. It is often compared to the Cellular Jail in Andaman due to its "no-escape" design and the harsh conditions it imposed on inmates. The prison was primarily used to incarce rate "rogue" soldiers and political prisoners during the British Raj. It gained significant historical importance as the place where Mahatma Gandhi stayed for two days to meet Irish prisoners. Notably, it was also where Nathuram Godse was reportedly held before his trial. The building was converted into a museum in 2011 through the efforts of the Indian Army and local historians. Museum Experience: Walking through the narrow, dark corridors of the jail is a sobering experience for any visitor. The structure consists of 54 cells, including specialized punishment cells that lack any natural light or ventilation. The museum displays various archival photographs, old documents, and memorabilia from the colonial era. It provides a haunting look into the struggles of freedom fighters and the strict military discipline of the past. The "Bread and Water" punishment system used here is still narrated by guides to illustrate the prison's severity. It is one of the few jail museums in India and stands as a silent witness to the turbulent history of the independence movement. The site is maintained meticulously by the Indian Army, keeping the heritage intact for future generations. It is an essential visit for history buffs.

How to Reach

By Air: Follow the same route as for Dagshai Cantonment, as the museum is located within it. Chandigarh Airport (75 KMS) is the most convenient. Taxis are readily available at the airport for a direct drop to the museum. The drive takes you through the beautiful Shivalik foothills and is quite enjoyable.

By Train: Kalka is the nearest big station (25 KMS). From Kalka, you can take a taxi directly to the museum. If you are taking the toy train, get off at Dharampur and take a 5 KMS taxi or bus ride. The journey is part of the experience, offering great views of the hills.

By Road: The museum is easily reachable from the National Highway 5. If you are driving from Solan, it's a short 20-minute trip. From Chandigarh, it takes about 1. 5 to 2 hours. There is parking available near the jail museum gate. State-run buses (HRTC) are a cheap and reliable way to reach Kumarhatti, from where the jail is a short distance.

By Local Transport: From the Kumarhatti junction, you can find shared autos or local taxis that will take you up to the Dagshai hill. The museum is a well-known landmark, so finding it is easy. If you are staying in Kasauli, you can hire a cab for a half-day trip to see the museum and the rest of Dagshai. Walking is also a great option within the town.
