How To Reach Friday Mosque

Kavaratti, Lakshadweep, India
A Landmark of Faith and Craftsmanship: The Friday Mosque, more famously known locally as the Ujra Mosque or Mohidden Mosque, is arguably the most significant and historically important mosque in Lakshadweep. Built in the 17th century by the revered Sheikh Mohammad Kasim, this mosque is a masterpiece of indigenous craftsmanship, distinct from many mainland structures. Its architecture is heavily influenced by the coastal Kerala style, featuring a unique sloping, tiled roof designed to handle the heavy monsoon rains, and it is built on an elevated platform. The mosque is renowned for its interior, specifically the pillars and the elaborately carved wooden ceiling, which is said to have been made from a single piece of driftwood. The intricate carvings depict local flora and geometric patterns with exceptional detail. The mosque has a special spiritual status, primarily serving as a site for meditation and the Sufi ritual called Rathib, which is performed on Monday and Friday nights. It is one of the island's most serene and peaceful places, attracting both worshippers and tourists interested in history, architecture, and spirituality. The compound also holds the tomb of its founder, Sheikh Mohammad Kasim, and a well whose water is traditionally believed to have curative properties, adding to its sacred aura. The mosque stands as a powerful testament to the island's heritage and the deep spiritual roots of its inhabitants, making it an essential cultural stop in Kavaratti.

How to Reach
