How To Reach Gandhari Maisamma Temple
Mancherial, Telangana, India
Temple History and Context: The Gandhari Maisamma Temple is located atop the historic Gandhari Khilla (fort), a site that dates back over a thousand years. This sacred shrine is dedicated to Maisamma, a powerful manifestation of the mother goddess highly revered by the local tribal communities. The temple serves as a spiritual anchor for the Gond and Nayaka tribes who have inhabited these forests for generations. Historically, the fort was built during the Rashtrakuta era and later fortified by the Kakatiya kings and Gond rulers. The temple is not just a place of worship but a symbol of the fusion between tribal culture and medieval fortification. Visitors must trek through a series of ancient rock-cut steps and massive gateways to reach the sanctum. The surrounding forest is rich in medicinal herbs, adding a layer of natural mystery to the spiritual journey. Every two years, the temple becomes the focal point of a massive tribal congregation known as the Gandhari Maisamma Jatra. This festival attracts thousands of devotees from neighboring states like Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh. The atmosphere during the Jatra is electric, filled with traditional music and rituals that have remained unchanged for centuries. Despite the passage of time, the deity is still worshipped with immense fervor, and the temple remains a living testament to the region's deep-rooted traditions.
