How To Reach Ghataprabha Bird Sanctuary

Belagavi, Karnataka, India
The Avian World of Ghataprabha: The Ghataprabha Bird Sanctuary is a small yet ecologically significant protected area located along the banks of the Ghataprabha River in Belagavi. Established in 1974, the sanctuary covers an area of roughly 29.78 sq. km and includes a 28-km stretch of the river and 22 small islands. These islands, formed by the backwaters of the Dhupdal Dam, serve as safe nesting and breeding grounds for a wide variety of indigenous and migratory birds. The sanctuary is most famous for hosting exotic migratory species such as the Demoiselle Crane and the European White Stork, which arrive from as far as Siberia and Europe during the winter months. The habitat consists of swampy areas, acacia thickets, and bamboo groves, which provide ample food and cover for the avian residents. Visitors can observe hundreds of birds, including the Little Cormorant, Median Egret, Openbill Stork, and the White Ibis. The sight of thousands of birds taking flight against the backdrop of the setting sun is a truly magical experience for nature lovers. The sanctuary is surrounded by fertile agricultural fields, which often serve as foraging grounds for the birds. Apart from birds, the river ecosystem supports various reptiles like cobras and pythons, as well as mammals like jackals and wild boars. The management of the sanctuary is closely linked with the water levels of the Dhupdal reservoir; when water levels are high, the islands become inaccessible to land predators, ensuring the safety of the nests. It is a vital stopover on the Central Asian Flyway for migratory birds. For photographers and ornithologists, the sanctuary offers unparalleled opportunities to study bird behavior in a natural setting. The peaceful environment, punctuated only by the calls of birds, makes it a soul-soothing destination for eco-tourists.
