How To Reach Jal Mahal

Batala, Punjab, India
Historical Significance: The Jal Mahal (Water Palace) in Batala, often referred to locally as the Baradari or Barah Dari (a structure with twelve doors), is a significant monument from the Mughal era, likely built during the time Akbar granted Batala as a Jagir to his foster brother, Shamsher Khan, in the late 16th century. The structure was designed as a pleasure pavilion or a summer retreat, strategically located near a water tank or Sarovar (though the water body may have dried up or changed over time). These Baradari structures were characteristic of Mughal and Rajput garden architecture, providing a cool, shaded place for administrative or leisure activities.Present State: The structure is a protected historic monument, now situated within the city and likely close to Hazira Park. While possibly not surrounded by water anymore, its architectural form and historical context remain vital. It represents the wealth and administrative importance of Batala during the peak of the Mughal Empire in Punjab.
