How To Reach Mahabat Maqbara

History and Purpose: The Mahabat Maqbara, which literally means the Mausoleum of Mahabat, is the grand resting place of Nawab Mahabat Khan II of Junagadh. Its construction was initiated by Mahabat Khan II in 1878 and was completed by his successor, Bahadur Khanji, in 1892. It stands as one of the mo st significant architectural legacies of the Nawab dynasty that ruled Junagadh until 1947. The complex also houses the adjacent, equally exquisite mausoleum of the Nawab's Wazir (Chief Minister), Bahauddinbhai Hasainbhai, which is often mistakenly grouped with the main maqbara.Architectural Fusion: The monument is famous worldwide for its utterly unique and elaborate architectural style, which is an audacious blend of Indo-Islamic and Gothic/European influences. This style, known as Indo-Saracenic or Indo-Gothic, was popular during the late 19th century under British influence but is executed here with a flair that is distinctively local. The main structure is well-maintained, but the smaller surrounding tombs and buildings in the compound show signs of age, providing a poignant contrast to the magnificence of the main mausoleum.

How to Reach

By Air:

Nearest Airport: Rajkot Airport (RAJ) is Rs.103 KMS away. From there, take an intercity bus or taxi to Junagadh (2Rs.3 hours). Keshod Airport (IXK) at Rs.40 KMS is an alternative but with limited connectivity.

By Train: Junagadh Junction (JND) is the main railway station, Rs.2 KMS from the Maqbara. The monument is a very short, easily accessible ride from the station. Junagadh is well-connected to all major cities in Gujarat.

By Road:

City Location: The Maqbara is located centrally in the old city, near Kalwa Chowk. It is well-signposted. GSRTC buses and private buses connect Junagadh to the rest of the state.

Taxis and Cabs: Intercity taxis are readily available to drop you in the city, from where local transport is necessary for the final stretch due to congested streets.

By Local Transport:

Auto-Rickshaws: The most convenient and popular way to reach the monument. Due to its central location, auto-rickshaws are readily available from all parts of the city. Negotiate the fare before starting.

Walking: If staying near the old city center, the Maqbara is easily accessible on foot, allowing you to experience the vibrant atmosphere of the traditional city bazaars and streets surrounding the historical monument.

City Buses: Local city bus routes may pass near the monument, offering the most budget-friendly way to travel.
