How To Reach Mayurakshi River

Deoghar, Jharkhand, India
The Mayurakshi River is a major rain-fed river in eastern India, flowing through Jharkhand and West Bengal before joining the Hooghly River. Its name literally translates to "Peacock's Eye" (Mayur=Peacock, Akshi=Eye), a name it earned due to its crystal clear water during the dry seasons. Its total length is about 250 to 265 KMs. Originating from Trikut Hill, it is a lifeline for the region, providing water for agriculture and supporting a diverse ecosystem. While famous for its serene beauty, the river has a history of devastating floods during the monsoon season, particularly from June to September, even after the construction of the Massanjore Dam (also called Canada Dam) further downstream near Dumka. In Deoghar, it is often viewed as a sacred water body, associated with spiritual practices and serving as a tranquil natural retreat from the city's religious hustle. It is a perfect spot for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and those seeking a peaceful environment.
