How To Reach Pandavanpara Cave Paintings

Neyyattinkara, Kerala, India
Pandavanpara Cave Paintings represent one of the most significant archaeological treasures in Southern India, located on a towering granite hill near Neyyattinkara. This site features a natural rock shelter that served as a dwelling for prehistoric humans during the Neolithic and Mesolithic eras. T he name Pandavanpara is rooted in local folklore, suggesting that the legendary Pandavas from the Mahabharata stayed here during their exile, though scientifically the site predates that era. Inside the cool interiors of the cave, visitors can witness approximately 37 distinct carved motifs that offer a window into the minds of ancient civilizations. These etchings include depictions of human figures, animals, and abstract geometric shapes, many of which were carved using primitive stone tools. The cave's entrance is roughly three meters in diameter, but the internal space is surprisingly spacious and well-ventilated by natural air currents. Despite its historical value, the site has faced threats from illegal quarrying in the past, but it is now a protected monument under the Kerala State Archaeology Department. Visitors often feel a deep sense of connection to history as they crawl through the narrow openings to view the ancient art. The panoramic view of the surrounding lush greenery of Perumkadavila from the hilltop adds a scenic dimension to the historical exploration. It remains a prime destination for those interested in petroglyphs and early human history in the Indian subcontinent. :
