How To Reach Rani Mahal

Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, India
The Queen's Residence and Historical Hub:: Rani Mahal, translating to the 'Queen's Palace,' is a historically rich structure that served as the primary residence of Rani Lakshmi Bai from 1853 until the outbreak of the 1857 Rebellion. The palace was built in the 18th century by Raghunath II of the Na walkar family and is strategically located in the busy old city area, separate from the Jhansi Fort. After the death of Raja Gangadhar Rao in 1853 and the application of the British Doctrine of Lapse, the British East India Company coerced the Queen to vacate the main fort and reside here, which gave the building its famous name. The palace is a two-tiered structure built around a central quadrangular courtyard, featuring six large halls and a parallel corridor. The most architecturally and historically significant part is the opulent Darbar Hall on the upper floor, which still features beautiful wall paintings and intricate carvings of flora and fauna, showcasing the artistic taste of the Maratha period. It was here that the Queen held her court and met the famous British lawyer John Lang to challenge the annexation of Jhansi. Although damaged during the 1857 Revolt, it was later renovated and now functions as an archaeological museum, housing a collection of stone sculptures from the Gupta to the Medieval periods. The palace is a critical site for anyone seeking a more intimate connection with the life and daily political struggles of Rani Lakshmi Bai before she took up arms. :
