How To Reach Shark Point

Kavaratti, Lakshadweep, India
Details of Shark Point: Shark Point is a famed, high-thrill open-sea dive location situated near the southern tip of Kavaratti Island, known for its regular sightings of various reef sharks, notably Grey Reef Sharks and occasional Nurse Sharks. This site is characterized by strong currents and a dee p drop-off, making it suitable for experienced divers. The underwater topography consists of a sloping reef wall that descends into the deep blue, creating a dramatic backdrop for marine life photography. The visibility here is exceptional, often exceeding 25 meters, allowing divers a clear view of the pelagic species that frequent the area. It is a critical part of the local ecosystem, showcasing the health of the Lakshadweep waters. The thrill of encountering these majestic creatures in their natural habitat is the primary draw. The ecosystem around Shark Point is vibrant, teeming with schools of barracuda, large trevallies, and diverse coral formations, though the corals here are more accustomed to the high-energy currents of the open ocean. Kavaratti's dive operators strictly regulate visits to ensure diver safety and the protection of the marine environment, making it a responsible yet exciting adventure. The name is self-explanatory, but the focus is on respectful, observed encounters rather than close interaction. The point serves as a natural beacon for pelagic movement, offering a unique window into the deeper oceanic life surrounding the atoll. The deep, crystal-clear water transitioning from the shallow lagoon makes the approach to the dive site a scenic journey in itself. The location is relatively untouched by mass tourism, preserving its raw, natural appeal for true ocean adventurers. (Word Count: 400)

How to Reach

By Air: Fly to Agatti Airport (AGX) from Kochi (COK), which is the sole entry point to the islands. From Agatti, take a ferry or a helicopter (seasonal) to Kavaratti Island. This takes approximately 1. 5 to 3 hours after landing.

By Train: There is no train connectivity to Lakshadweep. The nearest major railway station is Ernakulam Junction (ERS) in Kochi, Kerala. From there, you must proceed to the Kochi Port to board a ship to Kavaratti.

By Road: Lakshadweep is an archipelago; therefore, there is no road connectivity from the mainland. The nearest mainland access point is Kochi, which is over 400 KM away. Once on Kavaratti, local roads or coastal paths can be used.

By Local Transport: Once on Kavaratti, the point is best reached via a chartered dive boat from the Western Jetty or the Dolphin Dive Centre. On the island, the starting point (near Chicken Neck) is accessible by rented bicycles or local auto-rickshaws, followed by a short walk to the boat embarkation area. The journey from the main settlement to the dive centre area is generally quick, taking about 15 minutes by road/path.
