How To Reach Vypin Island

Kochi , Kerala, India
Vypin Island, often spelled Vypeen, is a chain of islands that forms a natural coastal boundary to the city of Kochi. Its origin is rooted in a significant natural event: a major flood in 1341 AD which is believed to have dramatically altered the coastline, leading to the formation of the island and the natural harbour of Kochi. This catastrophic event shifted the course of the Periyar River, depositing massive amounts of sand and silt, which eventually coalesced to form the long, narrow strip of land known as Vypin. The island is approximately 27 kilometers long and is a vital link between the mainland and the fishing villages along the coast. Historically, Vypin has been an important region with significant colonial and religious influence, particularly from the Portuguese and the Dutch. It is home to the Pallipuram Fort, considered the oldest surviving European fort in India, built by the Portuguese in 1503. The island is characterized by its long, scenic beaches, including the famous Cherai Beach, where the backwaters and the Arabian Sea meet. It is also a thriving area for the traditional fishing community, visible in the activity at Munambam Harbour and the scattered presence of Chinese Fishing Nets along its shorelines. Today, it is connected to the Ernakulam mainland by the Goshree Bridges, making it easily accessible and a popular destination for both local residents and tourists seeking a mix of history, beach life, and tranquil backwater views.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport (COK), located about 35-40 KMS from Vypin Island. From the airport, you can hire a prepaid taxi, a cab service, or take a local bus to the Ernakulam mainland and then travel to Vypin via the Goshree Bridges. The drive typically takes 1 to 1. 5 hours.

By Train: The closest major railway station is Ernakulam Junction (ERS) (South) or Ernakulam Town (ERN) (North), both approximately 10-15 KMS from the Vypin ferry terminal. From either station, you can take a taxi or an auto-rickshaw to the Vypin ferry point (Vypeen Jetty) or directly onto the island via the Goshree Bridges.

By Road: Vypin Island is very well connected to the Ernakulam mainland by the three interconnected Goshree Bridges. You can drive your own vehicle, hire a taxi, or take a public bus which runs regular services from Ernakulam city center and from the Vyttila Mobility Hub directly to various points on the island, including Cherai Beach. The road network is efficient, making bus and car travel a popular choice.

By Local Transport (Ferry): The most scenic and traditional way to reach the island is by the frequent public passenger and car ferries that run between Fort Kochi and the Vypin Jetty (Vypeen). This short, inexpensive ferry ride is a delightful experience and is the best way to connect the island with the historic Fort Kochi area. Auto-rickshaws and local buses are also widely available on the island for internal travel to places like Cherai Beach or the Pallipuram Fort.
