How To Reach Yachem Village

Longleng, Nagaland, India
Yachem Village is renowned as one of the largest and most progressive villages in the Longleng district, housing approximately 1,000 households. It serves as a living museum for the Phom Naga tribe, where the transition from a fierce head-hunting past to a modern Christian community is clearly visi ble. The village is divided into several sectors, each managed by its own Morung, which traditionally served as the educational and military barracks for young men. Historically, Yachem was a "sentinel village," strategically positioned to guard the Phom territories from neighboring tribes and British incursions. The residents are known for their resilience and were among the few who resisted colonial forces during the late 19th century. Today, the village is a center for higher education and social progress, with many of its youth pursuing professional careers across India. Despite this modernization, the core of the village remains deeply traditional, with stone-paved paths and ancient banyan trees that have witnessed centuries of history. Visitors are welcomed with open arms, and the village council often organizes cultural demonstrations to keep their ancestral songs and dances alive for the younger generation. It is a place where the echoes of the past meet the aspirations of the future, making it a mandatory stop for any cultural enthusiast visiting the region.
