Kamadgiri Hill / Temple

Chitrakoot, Uttar Pradesh, India
Kamadgiri is the spiritual heart of Chitrakoot, a forested hill that is believed to be the embodiment of Lord Rama himself. The name "Kamadgiri" literally translates to "the mountain that fulfills all desires." It is said that Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, and Lakshman spent a major part of their 14-yea r exile here, living in a simple hut. Unlike other places where a temple is the main focus, here the entire hill is worshipped as a deity. The hill is lush green throughout the year and, when viewed from above, resembles a bow. At the base of the hill stands the Kamtanath Temple, dedicated to the principal deity of the region. Pilgrims start their journey by offering prayers here before commencing the sacred circumambulation. The atmosphere is thick with the scent of incense and the sound of "Sita-Ram" chants. It is a place where nature and divinity merge seamlessly. Thousands of monkeys inhabit the hill, considered part of the sacred ecosystem. For every Hindu devotee, a visit to Chitrakoot is incomplete without bowing before the majesty of Kamadgiri.
