Keibul Lamjao National Park

Bishnupur, Manipur, India
The Unique Floating Ecosystem: Keibul Lamjao National Park is globally famous as the world's only floating national park, situated on the southeastern part of Loktak Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India. The park is a unique marshy ecosystem composed almost entirely of Phumdis, which are floating masses of vegetation, soil, and organic matter that have thickened into solid landmasses, moving slightly on the water surface. The total area is approximately 40 square kilometers. The park was established in 1977 to protect the critically endangered Sangai (Rucervus eldi eldi), the Manipur brow-antlered deer, which is endemic to this area and known as the "dancing deer" because of its delicate gait on the floating Phumdis. The park's dynamic nature, with its landscape constantly shifting with the movement of the Phumdis and the changing water levels of Loktak Lake, creates a challenging yet vital habitat. Its biodiversity includes various species of migratory birds, wild boar, fishing cat, and over 400 species of animals, making it an ecological treasure and a tentative UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park's survival is intrinsically linked to the delicate ecological balance of the surrounding Loktak Lake and the local communities' traditional practices. (Word Count: 200/400)

Ideal Visit Time: Sunrise (06:00 AM - 08:00 AM) and Sunset (03:00 PM - 04:00 PM) These are the best times for spotting the shy Sangai deer as they come out to graze, and the light is ideal for photography.

    Best Day for Visit:

Any Day: The park is large enough to absorb crowds, and the wildlife activity is weather-dependent rather than day-of-the-week dependent.

    Go on a Boat Safari:

Phumdi Exploration: Hire a local, officially permitted boat (small motorboat or dugout canoe) for a safari through the park's channels. This is the best way to get up close to the floating Phumdis and understand the unique ecosystem. Ensure you have a park guide.

World's Only Floating Park: Its unparalleled status as the only floating national park in the world, sitting on the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India (Loktak Lake), is its primary claim to fame and global recognition.

Home of the Sangai Deer: The park is the last natural sanctuary for the critically endangered Sangai (Manipur brow-antlered deer), the state animal of Manipur, making it a vital conservation area. The sight of the deer "dancing" on the Phumdis is a famous natural spectacle.

Unique Phumdi Ecosystem: The floating biomasses (Phumdis) are a unique ecological phenomenon, fascinating scientists and tourists alike. The park is a crucial part of the Loktak Lake Ramsar Site.

    No Fixed Structure Architecture:

Dynamic Phumdi Landscape: The "architecture" of the park is defined by its natural, dynamic, and fluid environment—the Phumdis. These floating islands vary in thickness from 0. 3 meters to 1. 2 meters and their surface area constantly changes. The key architectural feature is the natural arrangement of these organic landmasses, which sustain the habitat.

    Watchtowers and Observation Posts:

Functional Tourist Structures: The few man-made structures are primarily functional, including a few small, elevated wooden or concrete watchtowers (e. g. , at Toyaching) used for observing the Sangai deer and the overall park landscape. These are minimal, basic structures designed to provide a vantage point without disturbing the ecosystem.

    Boat Jetties and Channels:

Access Infrastructure: Access to the park is facilitated by simple, basic boat jetties near the edges and natural/man-made boat channels that cut through the Phumdis to allow the movement of local Phumsangs (floating huts) and tourist boats.
