Kuthiramalika Palace Museum (Puthen Malika)

Kuthiramalika Palace, also known as Puthen Malika (Mansion of Horses), is a magnificent example of traditional Kerala architecture and a profound tribute to the artistic and musical genius of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma, the former ruler of Travancore. Built in the 1840s, this palace was co nstructed entirely out of teakwood, rosewood, white marble, and granite, without the use of a single nail. Its name, 'Kuthiramalika', literally translates to 'Mansion of Horses', derived from the 122 intricately carved wooden horses that adorn the exterior walls, supporting the southern eaves of the roof. Each horse is unique, showcasing incredible craftsmanship. The palace, now converted into a museum, offers a fascinating glimpse into the opulent lifestyle and cultural heritage of the Travancore royal family. Only a fraction of its 80 rooms are open to the public, but even these showcase a treasure trove of royal artifacts. Visitors can see a stunning collection of traditional furniture, including a famous ivory throne and two massive thrones made of 24 ivory tusks and Bohemian crystals. The museum also displays a unique collection of traditional musical instruments, as Maharaja Swathi Thirunal himself was a renowned musician and composer. Exquisite paintings, traditional weaponry, Belgian and Italian mirrors, crystal chandeliers, and an amazing "musical tree" that produces 8 different notes when tapped are among the captivating exhibits. The floors, made of a traditional mixture of egg whites, limestone, and charcoal, remain cool even in warm weather. A guided tour is usually part of the experience, providing detailed insights into the palace's history and the significance of its artifacts. The palace's proximity to the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple makes it a convenient and historically enriching complementary visit.
