Lord Shiva Statue
The Lord Shiva Statue in Murudeshwar is an iconic landmark of India, standing tall at 123 feet (37 meters). It is built on Kanduka Hill, which is surrounded by the Arabian Sea on three sides. The statue is designed such that it receives direct sunlight, making it sparkle brilliantly throughout the day. It was financed by businessman R.N. Shetty and took about two years to complete. Below the statue is a cave museum called Bhukailasa, which depicts stories from the Ramayana through lifelike statues. The statue shows Lord Shiva in a meditative pose with four arms, holding a trident and a small drum (damaru). The sheer scale of the monument against the backdrop of the blue sea is breathtaking. It has become a symbol of modern Indian craftsmanship combined with ancient religious devotion. The temple complex also features a 20-story Rajagopura, which is the tallest of its kind, offering an elevator ride to the top for a panoramic view of the statue and the coastline. The entire area is beautifully landscaped with gardens and smaller shrines, making it a complete spiritual and tourist destination.
