Maa Bhairavi Temple

Gopalpur, Odisha, India
Maa Bhairavi Temple in Mantridi is one of the most powerful and revered Shakti shrines in Southern Odisha. The temple is unique because the main deity, Goddess Bhairavi, is depicted with a single leg, carved into a stone that was famously discovered by a farmer while plowing his field. This miracul ous origin story adds a layer of deep faith for the thousands of devotees who visit every week. The temple complex is quite large and includes 108 smaller shrines dedicated to various gods and goddesses, representing the diverse pantheon of Hindu mythology. It is a place where Shaktism and Vaishnavism coexist beautifully, as there is also a significant Jagannath temple within the same walls. Historically, sailors and fishermen from the nearby coast would seek the blessings of Maa Bhairavi before venturing out into the deep sea, believing she would protect them from the wrath of the ocean. Today, the temple is a hub of spiritual activity, especially on Tuesdays and during major festivals. The well-maintained gardens and the organized layout of the shrines make it a pleasant place for a spiritual day trip from Gopalpur.
