Matheran Toy Train (Neral-Matheran Hill Railway)
The Matheran Toy Train, officially known as the Neral-Matheran Hill Railway, is not just a mode of transport but a quintessential Matheran experience and a journey back in time. This narrow-gauge railway, built in 1907 by Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy, is a heritage railway and a testament to early 20th-cen tury engineering. It traverses a winding 21-kilometer route from Neral, at the foot of the Sahyadri mountains, up to Matheran, climbing over 2,600 feet through dense forests, across bridges, and around numerous sharp bends.
The train moves at a leisurely pace, allowing passengers to fully immerse themselves in the breathtaking scenery. The journey is characterized by lush green valleys, deep ravines, and panoramic views that gradually unfold as the train ascends. It passes through several small stations like Jummapatti, Waterpipe, and Aman Lodge, each offering unique vantage points and glimpses of local life. The most famous feature is the "One Kiss Tunnel," the only tunnel on the route, named for its short length.
Riding the Matheran Toy Train is an eco-friendly and nostalgic way to reach the hill station, aligning perfectly with Matheran's automobile-free policy. The small, colorful carriages, the gentle chugging sound, and the open windows that allow for uninterrupted views create an enchanting experience. During the monsoon season, the train services can be affected due to heavy rains and potential landslides, with services sometimes limited to a shuttle between Aman Lodge and Matheran. However, when operational, it offers an unforgettable journey, transitioning from the bustling plains to the serene, verdant hills of Matheran, making it an integral part of the hill station's charm.
