Nalabana Bird Sanctuary

Satapada, Odisha, India
Nalabana, which translates to "Forest of Reeds," is the largest island within Chilika Lake and was declared a bird sanctuary in 1987. It is the core area of the Chilika ecosystem and serves as the primary wintering ground for millions of migratory birds. The island, often partially submerged during the monsoon, gradually re-emerges as the dry season approaches. During the peak migratory season, from November to February, the sanctuary becomes a vibrant haven for an astonishing variety of avian species, including flamingos, pelicans, pintails, and various species of waders and ducks. A boat trip to Nalabana is a full-day excursion that offers unparalleled opportunities for birdwatching and photography.
